Mozambique, Maize, All years

Mozambique's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 220,055 tonnes in 2003 to 312,509 tonnes in 2014. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.5% and 21.6%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2016 with a value of over 158 million USD, equivalent to 5.8% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Household-level storage. In Mozambique, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Zambézia. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 924,953 people in 2003 to 1,313,565 people in 2014.
