Chad's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 32,188 tonnes in 2012 to 64,678 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 8.5% and 8.8%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2011 with a value of over 30 million USD, equivalent to 0.5% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Chad, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Ouaddaï. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 143,308 people in 2012 to 287,961 people in 2011.
