Tanzania's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 82,804 tonnes in 2004 to 125,678 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.4% and 12.4%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Tanzania, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Dodoma. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 340,101 people in 2004 to 516,199 people in 2011.
