Nigeria's estimated postharvest losses for rice in 2019 was 984,908 tonnes or 11.7% which had an estimated value of more than 882 million US dollar, which corresponds to 0.9% of national agricultural GDP.
As for nutrition 3,437 billion kcal were lost, which is the equivalent of more than 4 million people, in terms of annual nutritional dietary energy requirements. In the value chain, the majority of the loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying, Threshing and Shelling, and then Winnowing. Highest estimated postharvest maize losses in tonnes were estimated to occur in Niger.
