In 2022, Burkina Faso's annual estimated postharvest losses were 194,849 tonnes for sorghum, 197,799 tonnes for maize, 104,390 tonnes for millet, 33,373 tonnes for rice. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 17.1% for maize and 10.5% for millet.
Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Burkina Faso, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for sorghum in Boucle du Mouhoun, for maize in Hauts-Bassins, for millet in Boucle du Mouhoun, for rice in Hauts-Bassins. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated maize grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 835,659 people.
