Burundi, Maize, All years

Burundi's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 21,182 tonnes in 2007 to 52,275 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 18.0%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2017 with a value of over 29 million USD, equivalent to 3.2% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burundi, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Bururi. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 93,568 people in 2007 to 230,917 people in 2018.
