Botswana's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 1,108 tonnes in 2015 to 6,675 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 14.5% and 21.4%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Botswana, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Southern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 4,347 people in 2015 to 26,180 people in 2011.
