Eritrea, All cereals, 2018

In 2018, Eritrea's annual estimated postharvest losses were 20,292 tonnes for sorghum, 2,973 tonnes for millet, 3,390 tonnes for barley, 1,745 tonnes for teff. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 17.2% for maize and 8.5% for millet.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Eritrea, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for sorghum in Gash-Barka, for millet in Debub (Southern), for barley in Debub (Southern), for teff in Debub (Southern). Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated sorghum grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 81,361 people.
