In 2020, Gambia's annual estimated postharvest losses were 5,548 tonnes for millet, 4,680 tonnes for rice, 3,550 tonnes for maize, 2,435 tonnes for sorghum. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 18.0% for maize and 11.2% for millet.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Gambia, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for millet in Central River, for rice in Central River, for maize in Upper River, for sorghum in Upper River. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated millet grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 24,533 people.
