Niger, All cereals, 2019

In 2019, Niger's annual estimated postharvest losses were 282,452 tonnes for millet, 231,565 tonnes for sorghum, 24,631 tonnes for rice, 6,517 tonnes for maize. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 17.2% for maize and 8.6% for millet. The costliest estimated postharvest losses in USD are for millet: over 93 million USD, which corresponds to 1.9% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Niger, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for millet in Zinder, for sorghum in Zinder, for rice in Tillabéri, for maize in Tahoua. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated millet grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 1,286,050 people.
