Niger's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 230,071 tonnes in 2009 to 334,060 tonnes in 2016. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 8.6% and 8.6%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 163 million USD, equivalent to 5.1% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Niger, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Maradi. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 1,047,549 people in 2009 to 1,521,029 people in 2016.
