Niger's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for rice ranged from 1,910 tonnes in 2017 to 24,631 tonnes in 2019. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 10.9%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2019 with a value of over 17 million USD, equivalent to 0.4% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest rice loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Niger, on average the highest quantity of rice production occurs in Tillabéri. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated rice lost postharvest ranged from 8,339 people in 2017 to 107,526 people in 2019.
