Senegal, All cereals, 2019

In 2019, Senegal's annual estimated postharvest losses were 72,642 tonnes for millet, 78,256 tonnes for maize, 44,914 tonnes for rice, 33,406 tonnes for sorghum. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 16.3% for maize and 8.8% for millet. The costliest estimated postharvest losses in USD are for millet: over 30 million USD, which corresponds to 0.9% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Senegal, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for millet in Kaffrine, for maize in Kaolack, for rice in Kolda, for sorghum in Kaffrine. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated maize grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 327,727 people.
