Chad, All cereals, 2020

In 2020, Chad's annual estimated postharvest losses were 93,668 tonnes for sorghum, 48,433 tonnes for millet, 39,569 tonnes for maize, 20,705 tonnes for rice. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 15.4% for maize and 8.6% for millet. The costliest estimated postharvest losses in USD are for sorghum: over 32 million USD.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Chad, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for sorghum in Sila, for millet in Ouaddaï, for maize in Lac, for rice in Mayo-Kebbi-Est. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated sorghum grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 394,119 people.
