Burkina Faso's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for fonio ranged from 1,144 tonnes in 2021 to 6,689 tonnes in 2009. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 14.3% and 25.6%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest fonio loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burkina Faso, on average the highest quantity of fonio production occurs in Boucle du Mouhoun.
