Burkina Faso's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 54,670 tonnes in 2000 to 383,710 tonnes in 2014. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.1% and 26.8%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burkina Faso, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Hauts-Bassins. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 230,971 people in 2000 to 1,621,098 people in 2014.
