Burkina Faso's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 64,581 tonnes in 2000 to 135,966 tonnes in 2008. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 10.2% and 10.9%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 54 million USD, equivalent to 1.8% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burkina Faso, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Boucle du Mouhoun. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 284,570 people in 2000 to 599,119 people in 2008.
