Burundi's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 4,726 tonnes in 2012 to 12,840 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.4%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Burundi, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Kirundo. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 19,549 people in 2012 to 53,114 people in 2011.
