Botswana's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 214 tonnes in 2001 to 2,978 tonnes in 2006. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 5.3% and 12.1%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Botswana, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Chobe. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 883 people in 2001 to 12,286 people in 2006.
