Eritrea's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 1,015 tonnes in 2004 to 4,955 tonnes in 2007. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 8.4% and 8.5%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Eritrea, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Debub (Southern). Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 4,334 people in 2004 to 21,154 people in 2007.
