Eritrea's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 6,984 tonnes in 2004 to 36,926 tonnes in 2007. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Eritrea, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Gash-Barka. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 28,002 people in 2004 to 148,052 people in 2007.
