Ethiopia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for teff ranged from 279,423 tonnes in 2005 to 686,654 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.3% and 12.6%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2020 with a value of over 493 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest teff loss is estimated to be happening at Threshing and Shelling. In Ethiopia, on average the highest quantity of teff production occurs in Oromia.
