Ghana's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 12,611 tonnes in 2007 to 27,393 tonnes in 2009. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 11.2%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2009 with a value of over 17 million USD, equivalent to 0.2% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ghana, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Northern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 53,733 people in 2007 to 116,717 people in 2009.
