Ghana's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 19,306 tonnes in 2007 to 43,586 tonnes in 2009. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.4%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 23 million USD, equivalent to 0.3% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Ghana, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Upper West. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 77,743 people in 2007 to 175,511 people in 2009.
