Kenya, Maize, All years

Kenya's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 325,423 tonnes in 2008 to 864,189 tonnes in 2010. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 16.5% and 25.0%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2013 with a value of over 289 million USD, equivalent to 2.0% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Kenya, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Rift Valley. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 1,386,204 people in 2008 to 3,681,192 people in 2010.
