Madagascar's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 38,044 tonnes in 2018 to 95,459 tonnes in 2008. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.5% and 17.7%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Madagascar, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Vakinankaratra. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 164,309 people in 2018 to 412,278 people in 2008.
