Mali's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 36,977 tonnes in 2000 to 568,345 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 15.5% and 15.6%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mali, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Sikasso. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 158,400 people in 2000 to 2,434,648 people in 2018.
