Mali's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for rice ranged from 88,761 tonnes in 2011 to 348,930 tonnes in 2018. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 10.9% and 11.0%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2018 with a value of over 235 million USD, equivalent to 3.7% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest rice loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mali, on average the highest quantity of rice production occurs in Ségou. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated rice lost postharvest ranged from 380,231 people in 2011 to 1,494,731 people in 2018.
