Mali's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 60,160 tonnes in 2001 to 183,726 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 11.1% and 11.1%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2011 with a value of over 61 million USD, equivalent to 1.4% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mali, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Koulikoro. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 254,017 people in 2001 to 775,762 people in 2011.
