Mauritania's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 1,448 tonnes in 2012 to 4,077 tonnes in 2006. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 17.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mauritania, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Gorgol. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 5,953 people in 2012 to 16,764 people in 2006.
