Mauritania's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 3,274 tonnes in 2012 to 15,822 tonnes in 2013. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.2%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mauritania, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Hodh ech Chargui. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 13,270 people in 2012 to 64,123 people in 2013.
