Mauritania's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for wheat ranged from 309 tonnes in 2006 to 578 tonnes in 2009. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.9%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest wheat loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mauritania, on average the highest quantity of wheat production occurs in Tagant. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated wheat lost postharvest ranged from 1,185 people in 2006 to 2,222 people in 2009.
