Malawi's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 2,259 tonnes in 2005 to 14,261 tonnes in 2019. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 10.7% and 12.5%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Malawi, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Southern Region. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 9,908 people in 2005 to 62,538 people in 2019.
