Mozambique's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 10,419 tonnes in 2015 to 68,038 tonnes in 2004. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.5% and 12.8%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Mozambique, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Nampula. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 46,065 people in 2015 to 300,820 people in 2004.
