Niger, All cereals, 2021

In 2021, Niger's annual estimated postharvest losses were 295,626 tonnes for millet, 187,442 tonnes for sorghum, 7,028 tonnes for rice, 3,300 tonnes for maize. The highest and lowest estimated postharvest loss percentages are 17.2% for maize and 8.6% for millet. The costliest estimated postharvest losses in USD are for millet: over 135 million USD.

Within the value chain, for all crops the majority of loss is estimated to be happening at harvesting/field drying. Within Niger, the highest postharvest losses in tonnes occur for millet in Maradi, for sorghum in Maradi, for rice in Tillabéri, for maize in Zinder. Regarding the nutritional losses, the estimated millet grain lost postharvest could have met the annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements of 1,346,035 people.
