Niger's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 90,174 tonnes in 2009 to 260,835 tonnes in 2020. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.2%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2018 with a value of over 94 million USD, equivalent to 1.9% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Niger, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Maradi. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 388,016 people in 2009 to 1,122,370 people in 2020.
