Nigeria's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 560,212 tonnes in 2005 to 878,878 tonnes in 2010. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.3% and 12.3%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2021 with a value of over 507 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Nigeria, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Kano. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 2,318,350 people in 2005 to 3,637,100 people in 2010.
