Rwanda's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for rice ranged from 3,433 tonnes in 2017 to 17,851 tonnes in 2022. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 13.1% and 16.7%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 16 million USD, equivalent to 0.9% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest rice loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Rwanda, on average the highest quantity of rice production occurs in Eastern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated rice lost postharvest ranged from 14,466 people in 2017 to 75,218 people in 2022.
