Sudan's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 31,645 tonnes in 2013 to 237,511 tonnes in 2019. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 8.8%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2020 with a value of over 207 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Sudan, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Darfur. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 134,807 people in 2013 to 1,011,802 people in 2019.
