Sudan's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 272,323 tonnes in 2013 to 786,210 tonnes in 2016. The estimated loss percentages have been unchanged over time at 12.2%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2020 with a value of over 529 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Sudan, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Eastern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 1,089,406 people in 2013 to 3,145,166 people in 2016.
