Sierra Leone's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 2,629 tonnes in 2003 to 13,352 tonnes in 2012. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 17.0% and 23.9%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Sierra Leone, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Northern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 10,898 people in 2003 to 55,338 people in 2012.
