Senegal's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for millet ranged from 38,958 tonnes in 2007 to 105,767 tonnes in 2016. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 8.6% and 14.1%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2021 with a value of over 49 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest millet loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Senegal, on average the highest quantity of millet production occurs in Kaffrine. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated millet lost postharvest ranged from 170,163 people in 2007 to 461,978 people in 2016.
