Somalia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 6,632 tonnes in 2005 to 21,830 tonnes in 2002. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 10.5% and 12.4%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2011 with a value of over 8 million USD.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Somalia, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Bay. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 27,552 people in 2005 to 90,696 people in 2002.
