Eswatini's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for maize ranged from 5,438 tonnes in 2015 to 19,163 tonnes in 2013. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 16.1% and 16.3%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest maize loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Eswatini, on average the highest quantity of maize production occurs in Shiselweni. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated maize lost postharvest ranged from 21,973 people in 2015 to 77,432 people in 2013.
