Chad's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for rice ranged from 20,108 tonnes in 2012 to 21,302 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 11.4% and 11.6%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2008 with a value of over 22 million USD, equivalent to 0.4% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest rice loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Chad, on average the highest quantity of rice production occurs in Mayo-Kebbi-Est. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated rice lost postharvest ranged from 85,838 people in 2012 to 90,933 people in 2011.
