Chad, Sorghum, All years

Chad's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 75,385 tonnes in 2012 to 111,950 tonnes in 2011. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 11.0% and 11.6%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2009 with a value of over 43 million USD, equivalent to 1.0% of national agricultural GDP.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Chad, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Sila. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 317,192 people in 2012 to 471,044 people in 2011.
