Togo's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 17,871 tonnes in 2001 to 66,543 tonnes in 2012. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.4% and 23.2%. The largest losses in USD were estimated to have occurred in 2012 with a value of over 34 million USD, equivalent to 2.1% of national agricultural GDP.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Togo, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Savanes. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 72,874 people in 2001 to 271,349 people in 2012.
