Uganda's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 12,284 tonnes in 2019 to 98,303 tonnes in 2008. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.0% and 20.6%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Uganda, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Northern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 51,135 people in 2019 to 409,224 people in 2008.
