South Africa, Sorghum, All years

South Africa's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 4,780 tonnes in 2006 to 33,405 tonnes in 2008. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 5.0% and 13.1%.

Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In South Africa, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Free State. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 19,521 people in 2006 to 136,417 people in 2008.
