Zambia's estimated postharvest losses in tonnes for sorghum ranged from 1,054 tonnes in 2015 to 3,822 tonnes in 2001. The estimated loss percentages fluctuated between 12.3% and 13.3%.
Within the value chain, the majority of the postharvest sorghum loss is estimated to be happening at Harvesting/field drying. In Zambia, on average the highest quantity of sorghum production occurs in Southern. Regarding nutritional losses, the number of people whose annual energy (kcal) dietary requirements could have been met with the estimated sorghum lost postharvest ranged from 4,646 people in 2015 to 16,854 people in 2001.
